Trying to do things that seem impossible

It seems that many of the things we do in life – raising a family, sustaining a marriage, building a business, finding customers, building a team, motivating and leading others to do things that are difficult amid uncertainty – are almost illogical, and could seem impossible.

My daughter helps run a classic business and fitness club where she’s constantly busy, hiring and firing, responding to problems, on call 24/7, all while she’s raising six children from four to sixteen years old. Can you imagine what her household is like? School, health, activities like football, dance, and drama, and all the schedules and carting everyone around while trying to be a mother, loving wife, caring daughter and sister. She’s an amazing mother who helps to lead and create an incredibly close and fun family, despite all of life’s normal family challenges. When people talk about her, they tend to say, “How does she do it?” They also say, “She is amazing.” Yes, she is. I am very proud of her.

It’s amazing what each of us can handle every day: all the choices we’re required to make; the goals we have to set; the way we handle ourselves; and the way we get things done. We persevere and live today as best we can, on behalf of the life we want.

Every day, every week, every year – it starts again.

We don’t allow ourselves to think we’re a victim of circumstance or a “victim” of anything; we roll with what happens because we need to. We keep reminding ourselves that it’s all good, and that there’s learning to be gained and a little happiness in everything – if we just look for it. We remember that our kind words can impact everyone in our lives. If we focus on our blessings and the good things, we can be fine amid all the rubble of life’s challenges. We always have that chance to build on adversity, even though it’s frightening and might cause us some pain. Adversity wakes us up when we begin to drift. It causes us to re-focus on what’s important, to learn from the stark reality in front of us, and then start over.

My friend Tom taught me an approach years ago: he just says out loud, “SO!” Then he moves on.

So, let’s move on with our seemingly impossible, sometimes pain-in-the-neck, lives – because it’s not all bad. In fact, it’s terrific. I just have to think of my wonderful daughter Lisa. And all is good.

MMM Action:

Looking ahead to 2014 , I hope we’ll all take the chance to start again, for nothing is terminal. We can rebuild our business design, making sure things are structured to add value to customers. We can build our team and take more time for our team members. We can listen, coach, and train them. We can free ourselves of our problems and be in a position to build if we become genuinely, I mean genuinely, interested in our people and our customers in 2014.

You don’t have to hammer your team with discipline and minute-by-minute supervision if you can engage them in where the business is going and specifically how you need their help. That common vision is usually what’s missing and, believe me, that’s no corny theory. Engaged in your vision, people will surprise you, for they too can do the impossible every day.

We are all capable of so much.
